Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman Tahawwur Rana, sought by India for his role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, is set to be extradited from the US. The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled on August 15 that Rana is extraditable under the India-US Extradition Treaty. According to NDTV, Rana was convicted in a US court for supporting a terrorist organization linked to the Mumbai attacks. Though acquitted on some charges, India requested his extradition post his compassionate release after serving seven years in prison. The court upheld the District Court’s denial of Rana’s habeas corpus petition, affirming that his alleged offense falls within the treaty’s terms. In May, Rana, 63, had filed a writ of habeas corpus challenging the court order, which acceded with the request of the US government that the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks accused be extradited to India.
