IMinister of External Affairs, Dr S. Jaishankar, criticized Canada’s approach to diplomatic relations, accusing it of “double standards” in dealing with Indian diplomats. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit in an exclusive interview, Jaishankar highlighted discrepancies between the freedoms allowed to Canadian diplomats in India and the restrictions imposed on their Indian counterparts in Canada.
Jaishankar’s comments come amid deteriorating ties between the two countries, following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of Indian involvement in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani terrorist and Canadian citizen. He linked the strained relations to Canada’s inability to adjust to a changing world order where developing nations, like India, have risen to equal status with the West, the news outlet NDTV reported.
Trade and people-to-people ties remain strong, but politically, tensions have persisted, particularly after the 1985 bombing of Air India Flight 182, which remains a historical sore point in the bilateral relationship.
