India’s coal production hits record high as output surges  29.79 pc

India’s coal production and dispatch have reached record levels in the financial year 2024-25, marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy sector. The Ministry of Coal reported a total production of 190.95 million tonnes (MT) as of March 31, 2025, reflecting a 29.79% increase from 147.11 MT in the previous year. Coal dispatches also surged by 33.36% to 190.42 MT, up from 142.79 MT in FY 2023-24.

Both captive and commercial coal mines contributed to the growth. Captive mines recorded a 24.72% increase in production and 27.76% in dispatch. Meanwhile, commercial mines led the expansion with a 67.32% rise in production and 76.71% in dispatch. The ministry highlighted that these record figures underscore India’s push for energy self-reliance and industrial growth, supporting key sectors like power, steel, and cement.

The coal sector’s expansion aligns with India’s broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, ensuring a resilient and sustainable energy ecosystem while balancing industrial progress with environmental goals.
