Implement GRAP-4: Supreme Court to NCR states

In response to deteriorating air quality, the Supreme Court on Monday directed Delhi-NCR states to immediately enforce restrictions under the fourth stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), even if the Air Quality Index (AQI) falls below 450. Typically triggered when AQI surpasses 450, GRAP IV includes measures such as construction bans, school closures, and odd-even vehicle schemes.

The court emphasized the urgency of implementing GRAP restrictions the moment AQI levels reach alarming thresholds, stressing that the restrictions should continue even if the AQI drops below 450.

The decision comes amid rising concerns over Delhi’s air pollution, as thick smog blanketed the capital on Monday, disrupting train and flight schedules. Reduced visibility impacted operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport, where over 160 flights were delayed by 8:30 a.m., including 118 departures and 43 arrivals. Train services were also affected, causing significant inconvenience for passengers.
