Himachal eco-tourism workshop begins in Dharamshala

Himachal plans expanded eco tourism facilities, digital services and greater community participation to boost revenue and local employment

A three-day workshop organized by the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department began in Dharamshala to review ongoing eco-tourism activities and prepare an action plan to expand the sector over the next five years. The workshop is also focusing on modern facilities, digital services and greater employment opportunities for local communities.

K. Thirumal, CEO of the Eco Tourism Society and an Indian Forest Service officer, said conservators, chief conservators and divisional forest officers were presenting suggestions from their respective areas. Experts from Tamil Nadu and other states and institutions have also been invited to share their views.

The discussions include the use of artificial intelligence, digital and cashless transactions, and the development of modern facilities at eco-tourism sites.

Thirumal said eco-tourism currently generates around Rs 15 crore in annual revenue. The government has set a target to increase revenue to Rs 200 crore over the next five years. New trekking routes, parks, rest houses and other tourism activities will be developed, while existing facilities will be upgraded.

The Eco Tourism Society has around 200 rest houses, of which 25 have already been handed over to local communities for management. The number is expected to increase to 75 by the end of this year. Youth clubs and self-help groups will operate these facilities.

New eco-tourism site operators will also be required to employ residents. The department aims to ensure that 70 to 80 percent of workers at these sites are from the local community. Efforts are also being made to engage nature guides on trekking routes.

So far, 17 eco-tourism sites have been allotted. Operations have begun at some sites, while others are still under development. Nine more sites have recently been finalized and will be included after government approval, taking the total number to 26. These sites are expected to generate around Rs 8.5 crore in annual revenue.

During the closing ceremony, divisions involved in the effective operation and maintenance of rest houses, parks and trekking routes will be honoured. A report based on the workshop’s conclusions will be prepared to formulate the five-year action plan for expanding eco-tourism in Himachal Pradesh.
