Chandigarh, June 16

The Haryana government has initiated efforts to strengthen inter-state coordination with neighbouring Uttar Pradesh as part of its ongoing campaign against illegal sex determination and sex-selective practices.

Haryana Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Sumita Misra, has written to Uttar Pradesh Additional Chief Secretary, Medical Health and Family Welfare, Amit Kumar Ghosh, seeking enhanced cooperation in enforcement actions and administrative support. The move is aimed at improving the sex ratio at birth and advancing the objectives of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign.

In her communication, Misra said both states share a collective responsibility to protect the rights and dignity of the girl child and stressed that coordinated enforcement measures are essential to eliminate illegal sex determination practices.

Highlighting Haryana’s enforcement efforts under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC&PNDT) Act, she noted that dedicated teams have been conducting decoy operations and raids against individuals involved in unlawful sex-determination activities. According to the Haryana Health Department, 84 raids were conducted between January 2024 and March 2026, including 37 operations in Uttar Pradesh.

The Haryana government has also directed concerned authorities to intensify action under the PC&PNDT Act to strengthen the ongoing drive against illegal prenatal sex determination and sex-selective practices.

Misra acknowledged the support extended by several district administrations in Uttar Pradesh and said stronger coordination among district authorities, police and health departments would significantly improve the effectiveness of enforcement actions. She observed that such cooperation is crucial for conducting successful raids, registering FIRs, prosecuting offenders, and securing convictions.

She urged the Uttar Pradesh government to issue suitable directions to District Magistrates and Chief Medical Officers in districts bordering Haryana so that visiting PC&PNDT teams receive timely administrative and police assistance whenever required.

Misra also emphasized the importance of sustained monitoring of court cases arising from such operations to ensure offenders are brought to justice.

According to the Haryana Health Department, stronger collaboration between neighbouring states will help dismantle illegal sex determination networks more effectively and reinforce efforts aimed at safeguarding the girl child.
