Harold Carver remembered as a teacher who taught students to stand tall

Former student Roopinder Singh recalls the small gestures that made Carver a lasting influence on generations of students.

Harold Carver, founder director of St Stephen’s School in Chandigarh and former teacher at St John’s High School in Sector 26, Chandigarh who passed away this year at the age of 80, is being remembered by former students for the warmth, discipline and personal care he brought to teaching.

For Roopinder Singh, a pass out from St John’s High School (Batch 1977) Carver was a teacher whose lessons extended far beyond books and classrooms.

In a tribute to his former teacher, Singh recalled the small gestures that reflected Carver’s concern for his students. If he noticed a child’s shoelaces were undone, he would kneel down and tie them himself. Before assembly, he would straighten a boy’s tie, paying the kind of attention usually associated with a parent.

Carver also valued clean, well-kept uniforms, believing the way students carried themselves was closely linked to the discipline they developed within.

“These weren’t grand gestures. They were the daily, unglamorous work of someone who saw his students not as a batch to be taught, but as individuals to be looked after,” Singh wrote.

For Singh, those memories represent what made Carver a memorable educator. His influence, he said, extended beyond academic learning to dignity, discipline and self-worth.

Singh also recalled knowing Carver personally and said he still keeps a photograph of the two of them together from his school years.

Remembering Carver’s work as the founder director of St Stephen’s School, Singh said he built more than an institution. “He built a family,” he wrote, reflecting the sense of belonging associated with his legacy.

Carver’s influence, Singh said, would live on through the students he taught, helped and encouraged over the years.

“He will be deeply missed,” Singh wrote, signing off with the St John’s High School motto, “Semper Sursum”.
