The central government has reduced incoming spoofed international calls using Indian mobile numbers by 97 percent since launching a new blocking system, the government informed the Lok Sabha today. According to the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), 1.35 crore such calls were blocked within 24 hours of the system’s rollout on 17 October 2024. By 3 March 2025, the number had dropped to just four lakh, indicating a significant decline. Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar provided the data in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. In 2024, India registered 19.18 lakh cybercrime complaints on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP), with losses amounting to ₹22,811.95 crore.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has been working with telecom providers to prevent misuse of networks for cyber fraud. It has also developed a Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) to share data on fraudulent telecom activity among law enforcement, telecom firms, and security agencies.
The government has urged the public to use the Sanchar Saathi app to report suspected fraud and stay informed on telecom security. Cybercrime matters fall under the Ministry of Home Affairs, which oversees I4C and the NCRP platform.
