In a significant move in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for fuel conservation and national self-reliance amid the ongoing West Asia crisis, Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta on Wednesday announced a series of austerity measures to reduce fuel consumption and promote sustainable practices.

The Governor announced that Lok Bhavan will now function as a “Fuel Conservation Zone,” introducing “Petrol-Free Sundays,” during which no official vehicles will be used, and all engagements will be conducted via video conferencing or consolidated travel arrangements.

As part of the initiative, the Governor directed that his official convoy be reduced by half, with immediate effect. He also announced that all non-essential meetings will be held virtually and official events will be consolidated to minimize vehicle movement. Additionally, he stated that he will not use the state government helicopter for official engagements until global fuel prices stabilise.

Calling it a step of personal example-setting, Governor Gupta said the initiative reflects responsibility towards the nation during a global energy challenge.

In his capacity as Chancellor of state universities, the Governor also appealed to Vice Chancellors across Himachal Pradesh to promote fuel and energy conservation on campuses. He urged educational institutions to encourage carpooling, cycling, and greater use of public transport among students and staff, adding that universities must build a culture of conservation rather than just teach it.

Addressing students, he called them key drivers of social change and urged them to actively participate in nation-building and promote discipline and responsibility in their communities.

The Governor also emphasized the importance of the “Vocal for Local” campaign, encouraging citizens to prioritize local products, handicrafts, and domestic tourism over imported goods and foreign travel. He noted that Himachal Pradesh has strong tourism potential and that promoting local travel would strengthen the economy and create jobs.

Concluding his message, the Governor said the initiative is not just about saving fuel but about collective responsibility, adding that unity and discipline remain India’s greatest strength in times of crisis.
