Ganesh Chaturthi brings Maharashtra’s festive spirit to Chandigarh

Prayers, music and dance showcase the state’s rich cultural traditions at Maharashtra Bhawan in Sector 19

Maharashtra Bhawan in Sector 19 came alive with Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, as the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsava Samiti of Maharashtra Mandal, Chandigarh, brought devotees together for prayers, music and cultural performances.

Chandigarh Mayor Sourav Joshi attended the programme as the chief guest. The celebrations began with an aarti at 7.30 pm, followed by the distribution of modaks.

The cultural programme featured a musical tribute to singing legend Asha Bhosle and Suman Kalyanpur by the Maharashtra Mahila Mandal. The group performed retro favourites, including “Chura Liya Hai Tumne” and “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja”.

Addressing the gathering, Joshi said Chandigarh reflected unity, with people from different languages, castes and communities living together in the city. He said Chandigarh welcomed everyone. The organisers presented him with a memento.

A children’s dance competition added to the evening, with performances on songs, including “Jhumka Gira Re”, “Sharara”, “Say Cool” and “In the Jungle”. A mother-daughter performance was also presented.

The programme also featured tributes to the two veteran singers, including an Asha Bhosle song performed by Kuhu.

Members of the Maharashtra Mahila Mandal said women had organised an Anand Mela, featuring homemade Maharashtrian dishes. They said the initiative was aimed at keeping traditional food, customs and religious practices alive.
