Manali, May 22
Weather conditions changed dramatically in Himachal Pradesh on Friday, with fresh snowfall reported at Rohtang Pass and Shinkula Pass in May. Rainfall in the lower areas of the Kullu district brought a sharp drop in temperature, forcing residents to wear warm clothes again after days of rising heat. The sudden change in weather has also raised hopes for a boost in tourism across the Kullu-Manali valley.
Tourists visiting Manali reached Rohtang Pass early in the morning through taxis and enjoyed witnessing fresh snowfall. Many visitors also traveled via the Atal Tunnel towards the Shinkula region, where snowfall continued on Friday. Locals expressed surprise at seeing snowfall in May, especially after recent heatwave-like conditions in the valley. Residents said the rain brought significant relief from scorching temperatures and improved weather conditions for agricultural and horticultural activities.
Local residents and tourism stakeholders welcomed the change in weather, saying it would benefit both farming and tourism businesses. Farmers in Kullu district are currently harvesting wheat and preparing fields for maize sowing, both of which require adequate soil moisture. Taxi operators said snowfall in the higher reaches is likely to attract more tourists from the plains and lower states seeking cooler weather and snow experiences in the coming days.
