Several leading French newspapers have filed a lawsuit against the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, accusing it of using their content without compensation, the news outlet The Guardian Reported. The lawsuit is being spearheaded by prominent dailies such as Le Figaro, Les Echos, Le Parisien, and Le Monde, with additional support from titles like Telerama, Courrier International, HuffPost, Malesherbes Publications, and Le Nouvel Observateur, the news outlet further said.
The media outlets alleged that X has violated “neighbouring rights,” a provision under European law, which mandates payment when social media platforms republish news content. This legal action follows an earlier request for an emergency injunction against X, which the newspapers and the French news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP) argue has failed to engage in any negotiations regarding compensation for the content shared on the platform, the news outlet said.
