Electric bus operations expand in Kangra as HRTC pushes green transport

Five new Olectra electric buses take Dharamshala unit’s fleet to 20, with 40 now operating across Kangra

The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) is expanding the use of electric buses in Kangra district as part of the state government’s efforts to promote cleaner and greener public transport.

The Dharamshala HRTC unit has recently received five new Olectra electric buses, taking the total number of electric buses operating under the unit to 20. With electric buses being introduced in other HRTC units as well, the total number of such buses operating across Kangra district has reached 40.

The newly inducted buses are being operated on several local and inter-state routes, including Mohali, Kaned, Kangra and Pathankot. Four of the six routes connecting Dharamshala with Pathankot are currently being served by electric buses.

Dharamshala HRTC Regional Manager Sahil Kapoor said the electric buses are pollution-free and noise-free, offering passengers a quieter, more comfortable travel experience. He said the Dharamshala unit had received 15 electric buses in 2023, while the addition of five new Olectra buses has further strengthened the fleet.

According to Kapoor, the Olectra buses are equipped with blade-type batteries along with improved seating and suspension systems aimed at enhancing passenger comfort. The buses can also tilt to one side while passengers board or get off, making them more accessible for senior citizens and passengers with knee difficulties.

Passenger safety has also been given special attention. Kapoor said the buses move only after both doors are completely closed, helping prevent accidents involving passengers standing near the doors.

HRTC has not yet assessed the difference in operating costs between electric and diesel buses. Kapoor said the corporation would evaluate the operating expenses after gaining sufficient experience with the electric buses.

Kapoor said the state government’s decision to promote electric buses was an important step towards making Himachal Pradesh a greener state. He added that expanding electric public transport is expected to bring significant environmental and other benefits to the state in the coming years.
