New Delhi, May 1
Marking International Labour Day, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced a series of welfare measures for construction workers, including mobile health services at labour sites, financial assistance, and organised mass weddings for workers’ daughters, aimed at improving access to healthcare and social support.
Speaking during an interaction with workers at a construction site in the city, Gupta said the government is working to strengthen support systems for labourers and their families. A key focus will be on taking healthcare directly to workers through mobile medical vans at labour chowks and construction sites.
She also announced that the government will provide financial assistance for the weddings of workers’ daughters, with two mass wedding events planned each year. In addition, pregnant women workers will be given an honorarium as part of a broader effort to support vulnerable sections within the workforce.
The chief minister said assistance will also extend to the education of workers’ children. She urged labourers to register on the revived Delhi Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board portal to access these benefits, adding that special registration camps will be held at labour hubs.
Labour Minister Kapil Mishra said the registration system, which had remained inactive for years, has now been restored. He noted that the department has also been working on skill development and job placement initiatives for workers in the city.
The announcements signal a renewed push by the Delhi government to bring more workers under formal welfare coverage, with a focus on healthcare access, financial security and social support. The success of these measures will depend largely on worker registration and on-ground implementation in the coming months.
