DBA president proposes more chambers, healthcare cover for young lawyers

President A.S. Gujral highlights health cover, seating and parking

Newly elected District Bar Association (DBA) president A.S. Gujral on Thursday said that regular General House meetings, insurance and medical health policies for young lawyers, and improved connectivity to the parking area will be among his key priorities. “My top priority is to call General House every month, or twice in two months. Also, insurance and medical health policy for the youngsters, and connectivity with the parking area,” he said.

Addressing the gathering, Gujral said that inadequate seating and chambers for young lawyers remained a major concern. He said that the DBA association would discuss extending the chambers and creating proper seating arrangements. He also said around 44 young lawyers with three years of experience could be appointed in TLA to handle cases under the free legal aid system. According to him, they would receive up to Rs 10,000 per case.

Earlier, A.S. Gujral, along with newly elected office-bearers of the District Bar Association (DBA), Chandigarh, took the oath at the District Courts Complex today.

On infrastructure, the DBA president raised concerns over the condition of washrooms, particularly those for women, and said the association would work on their maintenance. He said that the association would examine the building’s condition for possible renovation or other measures. Newly elected DBA Secretary Tejwinder Singh Gill said improving facilities and infrastructure, cleanliness, parking, technology and e-court services would be among his priorities.

“Basically, my priority is very clear: I have to provide better facilities and infrastructure for advocates, cleanliness, and proper maintenance of the Bar premises,” Gill said, adding that efforts would be made to provide seating for young advocates and initiate the process for a new chamber building. He also stressed better coordination between the Bar and Bench.

“If we work with hand-in-hand coordination between the Bench and Bar, it would be much better for all the lawyers and advocates,” he said. He called for greater participation of young lawyers in programmes and decision-making, saying the strength of the Bar Association lay in its members standing together.

The elected body includes  Abhey Joshi as Vice-President, Pushpinder Singh as Joint Secretary and Prateek Garg as Treasurer. Pratibha Bhandari was elected Vice-President (Reserved for Female), and Neeta Kumari was elected Library Secretary (Reserved for Female).

The Senior Executive Members are Gurdev Singh, Karun Kumar, Sandeep Gupta, Ekta Sharma and Manjit Kaur Sandhu, while the Junior Executive Members are Ishnan Goel, Rajesh Dhakar, Vishwas Kumar, Alka Arora and Ritika Bajaj.

Gujral secured 661 votes, Gill 1,147, Abhey Joshi 1,071, Pushpinder Singh 836, and Prateek Garg 1,043 votes in their respective contests.
