Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann used a public rally in Mukerian on Wednesday to showcase his government’s welfare programmes, defend its governance record and launch fresh attacks on the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Addressing the gathering,  CM Mann said his government’s focus was on improving the lives of ordinary people through better public services, while accusing opposition parties of being more interested in political power than governance.

“Our politics is about the progress and prosperity of the people, not about holding on to power,”  Mann said.

The chief minister claimed his government had fulfilled key election promises by expanding access to free electricity, strengthening government schools, improving healthcare and creating employment opportunities. He said public funds were being invested in infrastructure, education and welfare instead of being misused.

Mann also highlighted irrigation and water management initiatives, saying the use of canal water for farming had increased significantly since his government took office. He added that recharge points had been created to improve groundwater levels, describing water conservation as essential for Punjab’s future.

Education remained a central theme of his speech. The chief minister said investments in teacher training, upgraded classrooms and school infrastructure had helped Punjab improve its performance in national school education rankings. He described education as the most effective way to reduce poverty and improve living standards.

Mann also criticised the Congress, accusing it of internal divisions and claiming its leaders were more focused on competing for the chief minister’s post than addressing public concerns. He also alleged that a future Congress government would discontinue several welfare programmes introduced by the AAP.                                                                                                                                                                                                   The chief minister alleged that the Shiromani Akali Dal had failed Punjab during its years in office and had weakened public institutions. He said the state’s voters had chosen a governance model centred on welfare rather than traditional party politics.
