Cracks in several Shimla houses reported after blasting during tunnel construction

Shimla, September 19

Several houses and a stretch of the Dhalli-Sanjauli bypass road have developed cracks amid heavy blasting during the construction of a four-lane tunnel between Bhattakufar and Chalaunthi in Shimla, raising concerns among residents.

More than seven buildings in the residential area near Summitry, adjoining Shanti Vihar ward, have reportedly been affected. Cracks have appeared on the building walls and floors which are reportedly widening, leaving residents worried about their safety.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has installed monitoring equipment at the site to assess the vibrations generated during tunnel construction. The NHAI is also videographing buildings in the affected area.

According to local residents, the four-lane tunnels are being constructed beneath the residential area. They alleged that blasting is being carried out at night, causing vibrations and posing a risk to buildings located above the tunnel.

Residents have sought an inspection of the affected area and raised concerns over continuing tunnel construction amid the reported damage. They have also demanded that the issue be examined and appropriate measures taken to ensure the safety of the buildings and the residents.
