Amritsar, June 15
A court in Amritsar has granted anticipatory bail to Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a case linked to an alleged incident at a police station in Punjab. Majithia, along with others, had been booked for allegedly storming a police station in Amritsar on May 31 in an attempt to secure the release of a detained party worker.
He faced multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including obstructing public servants, use of criminal force, unlawful assembly, rioting, intimidation, and damaging official records. Provisions of the Arms Act were also added.
Party spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kler confirmed that Majithia has been granted anticipatory bail. The police had earlier carried out searches at his residence, but he was not found following the registration of the case.
The Shiromani Akali Dal has described the case as politically motivated, claiming that the detained worker, Jobanpreet Singh, was a polling agent and had been illegally held without proper legal procedures. On June 3, the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered the release of Jobanpreet Singh, observing procedural lapses in his detention.
His father had also challenged the arrest, alleging it violated constitutional safeguards regarding arrest procedures.
The case continues to draw political attention in Punjab.
