Patiala, July 22
Balwant Singh Rajoana, convicted in the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, has written to Akal Takht acting Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, urging him to summon senior Sikh leaders of the BJP over the prolonged delay in deciding his mercy petition. Rajoana said he has completed 31 years in prison and will complete 19 years in the death cell on July 31. He questioned why no decision has been taken despite the matter remaining pending for nearly 15 years after the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) sought commutation of his death sentence. Rajoana said if no decision is forthcoming, the SGPC should consider withdrawing its petition.
