Mandi, June 27
Authorities on Saturday announced the release of excess water from the Pandoh Dam into the Beas River, raising its flow to more than 6,000 cusecs. The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) issued an alert urging residents along the riverbanks to avoid water-related activities for safety.
A BBMB release stated that around 2,000 cusecs of water would be discharged due to rising inflows at the dam, located 20 kilometers upstream of Mandi town. “Residents are advised not to go near the river and refrain from any water-related activities,” the statement said.
The release of water from Pandoh Dam is a routine measure during the summer and monsoon seasons to manage rising levels. The dam, built as part of the 990 MW Beas–Satluj Link Project, diverts river flow through a diversion structure. However, excess water is discharged into the Beas during inflow surges.
Past incidents of sudden releases have triggered flooding downstream in Mandi, Hamirpur, and Kangra districts, causing widespread property damage and, in some cases, loss of life. Authorities have stressed the importance of caution to prevent accidents and minimise risks.
The latest release underscores the need for preparedness among communities living along the Beas, as monsoon inflows are expected to remain high in the coming weeks.
