The controversy surrounding the alleged humiliation of Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi at a cultural event in Uttarakhand has taken a new turn, with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasising dialogue, cordiality and respect for the entertainment industry.

Dhami spoke to singer Mika Singh over the phone and subsequently shared a social media post highlighting the importance of resolving misunderstandings through mutual communication rather than allowing disputes to escalate. The Chief Minister stressed that cordiality and mutual respect should remain the foundation of every interaction.

Invoking Uttarakhand’s traditional philosophy of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ (the guest is equivalent to God), Dhami reiterated that artists are welcome and respected in the state.

The controversy erupted after Cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal allegedly questioned Mehndi’s performance at a cultural event. According to reports, the minister accused the singer of being intoxicated and questioned whether he was singing live or relying on lip-syncing. The remarks reportedly came despite claims that Mehndi had been paid Rs 35 lakh for the performance.

However, the allegations concerning alcohol consumption have not been independently verified, and the circumstances surrounding the reported exchange remain subject to clarification.
The incident has sparked a wider debate over the dignity of performers and the responsibility of public representatives when interacting with artists at official functions. Mehndi, known for popularising energetic Punjabi pop music, has enjoyed a long-standing career in the Indian music industry, with hit tracks such as “Tunak Tunak Tun” and “Bolo Ta Ra Ra”.

Dhami’s conversation with Mika Singh has added another dimension to the controversy, with the Chief Minister’s public message focusing on resolving the matter rather than escalating tensions.
By invoking the principle of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’, Dhami underlined the importance of treating artists with respect, courtesy and dignity, even when disagreements arise over a performance.

The episode has raised broader questions about the relationship between cultural performers and political leadership. As the controversy continues to draw attention, the focus remains on establishing the facts, avoiding unverified allegations and ensuring that disagreements are addressed through respectful dialogue.

For the entertainment fraternity, the incident serves as a reminder that respect for artistes should remain central to cultural celebrations.
