Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has criticised the central government for what he described as “step-motherly treatment” towards farmers by denying them a platform to present their demands. In a statement on Tuesday, Mann accused the Centre of prioritising international affairs, such as the Russia-Ukraine war, over addressing domestic agricultural issues. He called it “highly deplorable” that the Union government continues to ignore the grievances of the nation’s food producers.
“It is unfortunate that the Prime Minister is more focused on emerging as a global leader rather than resolving issues faced by our own countrymen,” Mann said. He noted that Punjab’s farmers had overexploited natural resources, including fertile soil and water, to contribute significantly to the national food pool, only to face what he termed a “hostile attitude” from the Union government.
Mann also highlighted the Centre’s reluctance to engage with farmers protesting just 200 kilometres from the national capital. He urged the government to abandon its “haughty attitude” and initiate dialogue with the agitating farmers without delay.
The Chief Minister emphasised that resolving farmers’ issues is essential for the larger public interest, adding that the Centre should not wait for a “special moment” to act.
