Modi makes historic visit to Guyana as first Indian PM in Over 56 Years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Guyana today, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the South American country in 56 years. He was warmly welcomed at Georgetown’s airport by Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, along with over a dozen cabinet ministers, in a gesture of unprecedented hospitality.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Modi expressed gratitude, writing, “Landed in Guyana a short while ago. Gratitude to President Dr. Irfaan Ali, PM Mark Anthony Phillips, senior ministers, and other dignitaries for coming to receive me at the airport. I am confident this visit will deepen the friendship between our nations.”

The Prime Minister also thanked the Indian community in Guyana for their spirited welcome, stating, “A heartfelt thank you to the Indian community in Guyana for their warm and spirited welcome. They have shown that distance is never a barrier to staying connected to one’s roots. Glad to see the community making a mark here across different sectors.”
