Former Union minister and Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur on Wednesday accused the Congress of weakening democratic institutions and spreading distrust in the electoral process. Speaking to reporters at Kangra airport, he criticised Rahul Gandhi for challenging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to an open debate, alleging that the Congress disrupts parliamentary proceedings but seeks debates outside Parliament.
Thakur said the Congress had received the opportunity to govern the country for the longest period but was now allegedly working to weaken democracy and discredit constitutional institutions. He attributed the party’s criticism of the electoral process to repeated election defeats and said voters have rejected it several times.
Taking a swipe at the Congress leadership, Thakur said, “Confucius was a Chinese philosopher, but Congress leaders are ‘Confuse Us’.” He also questioned the party’s objections to EVMs and the electoral process, asking why it continued to raise doubts despite winning elections conducted through the same system.
Thakur alleged that Rahul Gandhi was spreading misinformation and creating confusion about constitutional institutions.
Responding to questions about the justice rally in Sangrur and the Congress’s preparations for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, Thakur raised the issue of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. He said the Congress should apologise to the Sikh community in Punjab and across the country for the violence.
Referring to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s remarks during that period, Thakur questioned whether Rahul Gandhi considered the atrocities against Sikhs justified. He said Rahul Gandhi should visit Punjab and apologise to the Sikh community if the Congress was willing to acknowledge its mistakes.
