Former IPS officer and Aam Aadmi Party MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh has resigned from the Punjab Legislative Assembly, citing his commitment to Punjab’s development and calling for clean politics and transparent administration.

In a letter addressed to the Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Singh tendered his resignation from the membership of the House with effect from November 1, 2026. He also announced his decision through a social media post, thanking the people of Amritsar for their support and affection.

Resignation letter

“I will remain grateful to you till my last breath for the love and respect you have given me,” he said.

Singh said his only objective in public life was to work for Punjab’s development and that he had no personal interests. He urged people to move beyond what he described as the politics of streets, drainage and ribbon-cutting and work towards making Punjab a developed and leading state.

Claiming that he had completed nearly 90 per cent of the work expected of an MLA, Singh said the responsibilities of councillors, mayors and MPs should not be confused with those of an elected legislator. He added that details of the development work undertaken in his constituency were available in newspapers and on his Facebook page.

Describing his biggest achievement, Singh said he had moved away from what he termed the culture of paternalism in politics and drew inspiration from ordinary people.

He said he had consistently raised issues concerning Amritsar residents in the Assembly, including water supply, sewerage, Circuit House, Company Bagh, Ganda Nala, Guru Nanak Dev University, Government Medical College and Saroop Rani College. He also referred to the alleged disrespect shown to the Guru Granth Sahib at Bargari.

Singh claimed that issues concerning individual streets and neighbourhoods in his constituency had been raised in such detail in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha for the first time.

Outlining his future plans, he said he would work with people to develop a forward-looking strategy for clean politics and transparent governance.

“My only aim is ‘Punjab First’. I have no personal interest other than this,” he said.

Kunwar Vijay Pratap present in Delhi, he is going to join the BJP today at 12:30 according to source.
