Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday accused the BJP of weakening democracy through alleged vote theft and targeting voters’ rights, while calling for a united fight to protect democratic institutions. He made the remarks during a National Resolve Day program held at Shimla’s Ridge to mark the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Sukhu paid tribute to Indira Gandhi and recalled her contribution to India’s unity and integrity. He said her role in strengthening national unity, nationalizing banks and promoting the country’s development could not be forgotten. He also highlighted her contribution to strengthening democracy and people’s voting rights.

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, Cabinet Minister Colonel Dhani Ram Shandil, Minister Yadvinder Goma, former MP Pratibha Singh and other dignitaries were present at the program.

Targeting the BJP and the Election Commission, Sukhu alleged that the poll body was acting at the Center’s behest and deleting the votes of crores of people, thereby weakening democracy. He accused the BJP of forming governments through vote theft and depriving people of their right to vote.

Sukhu said Congress was fighting to protect democracy and would continue its protest against the alleged irregularities. He added that people from across the country would gather at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on Sunday under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership to raise their voice against the Center and the Election Commission.

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri and former MP Pratibha Singh also questioned the Election Commission’s impartiality and functioning. They said Congress leaders and supporters would participate in Sunday’s rally and demand Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
