Traders and industrialists in Punjab have raised concerns over limited business opportunities, alleged threats and difficulties affecting commercial activities, National Traders Welfare Board chairman Sunil J Singhi said at a meeting in Patiala on Friday.
Organised by the Punjab Traders and Industries Association at Spring Field Palace, the meeting was attended by Singhi, who was appointed by the Government of India, as the chief guest.
Speaking to reporters, Singhi said the meeting provided an opportunity to interact directly with traders, with business representatives discussing their concerns in detail.
He said the Centre, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had established the National Traders Welfare Board to address issues related to the safety, welfare, freedom and success of traders. He also briefed participants on the board’s role and its potential benefits for the trading community.
Referring to his interactions with traders and industrialists in Punjab, Singhi said he had heard complaints about limited business opportunities, alleged threats and demands being made against traders. He said some industrialists had reported that the prevailing circumstances were affecting industry and commercial activities.
Singhi also expressed concern over reports that some non-resident Indians (NRIs) living abroad were considering donating money rather than investing in Punjab, saying this raised questions about the state’s investment climate.
He said he regularly interacted with traders across states to understand the problems faced by the business community, adding that concerns over Punjab’s business environment and investment had also featured in his discussions with local traders and industrialists.
