Three government primary schools in Ichhi, Gaggal and Rachhiyalu may be relocated to facilitate the proposed expansion of Kangra Airport, with the Education Department preparing a proposal for state government approval.
Deputy Director of School Education (Elementary) Balwinder Singh Guleria said the department was identifying alternative sites to minimise disruption to students’ education. The relocation process would begin only after the state government approved the proposal and issued directions.
Ichhi Primary School may be shifted to Balla Matour School, around 500 to 600 m away. Guleria said the alternative school had a well-maintained building and a boundary wall.
Gaggal Primary School may be relocated to Kandraher Central Primary School near Chataru, about 1.5 km away. Guleria said enrolment at the Gaggal school had been declining, with most students belonging to migrant families. However, the department was considering future enrolment needs. Kandraher school has adequate classrooms and a spacious playground.
The department is still searching for a suitable building and site for Rachhiyalu Primary School.
Guleria said the proposal envisaged shifting students and teachers from all three schools to the identified alternatives. The final decision will depend on the state government’s approval and directions.
