The Kangra district administration has developed a system to monitor road accident black spots and ensure timely corrective measures, with police personnel using software to record accident details and share findings with the concerned departments.
Under the Electronic Detailed Accident Report (E-DAR) system, investigating officers use the Integrated Road Accident Database (I-RAD) software to document probable causes of accidents. The information is forwarded to the Public Works Department (PWD) or the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), depending on the road concerned, to help identify risks and prevent similar incidents.
Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bairwa said district-level road safety committees had been constituted to review accident-prone locations and monitor corrective work. At a recent meeting, departments identified locations requiring improvements and presented proposed measures. They were directed to complete the work within the stipulated deadlines.
Bairwa said improving road safety did not always require major structural changes. Measures such as proper signage, road markings, reflective indicators and solar blinkers could also help reduce accident risks.
He directed the road-owning agencies, including the NHAI and the state PWD, to implement the prescribed measures within the deadline and submit compliance reports. The initiative aims to ensure that identified black spots receive timely attention and corrective action.
