A five-member US congressional delegation met the 14th Dalai Lama at his residence in McLeodganj, Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, on Wednesday.
The delegation comprised US Representatives Jason Smith, David Schweikert, Elise Stefanik, Laura Friedman and Andy Ogles. Sikyong Penpa Tsering, head of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), was also present during the meeting.
The interaction comes amid continued engagement by US lawmakers with Tibetan leadership, with the preservation of Tibetan culture, religious freedom and the rights of Tibetans remaining key concerns in US political and diplomatic circles.
Before arriving in Dharamshala, the delegation met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Mumbai. The discussions covered India-US relations, including trade, energy, security, technology, and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
The visit brought the US lawmakers into contact with both Indian and Tibetan leadership during their engagements in the country.
