AAP warns of Assembly gherao over unfulfilled Congress poll guarantees
Shimla: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced plans to contest all 68 Assembly seats from Himachal Pradesh in the 2027 elections and warned of an Assembly gherao during the upcoming winter session over the Congress government’s alleged failure to fulfil its poll guarantees.
AAP Himachal Pradesh in-charge Rituraj Jha made the announcement in Shimla during a visit to the party’s newly opened office. He accused the Congress government led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of copying AAP’s guarantees without demonstrating the commitment and capability to implement them.
Jha said the party was strengthening its organisational base and had enrolled more than 20,000 new members. He added that AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal was expected to visit Shimla next month to address a press conference and announce the party’s future electoral strategy.
He said the party will focus on building its organisation at the booth, panchayat and state levels over the next three to four months.
Targeting both the Congress and the BJP, Jha alleged that people in Himachal Pradesh were dissatisfied with the two parties. He said the Congress had promised Rs 1,500 per month for women, 300 units of free electricity, quality schools, clinics and employment opportunities for young people during the previous assembly elections but had failed to deliver on these commitments.
Jha claimed that the Congress had copied AAP’s guarantees, including free electricity and free bus travel for women, but lacked the political will to implement them. Citing Punjab, he claimed that the AAP government there had delivered more than it had promised.
He said AAP will take to the streets to raise public concerns and pressurize the Congress government to fulfil its guarantees, including protests outside the assembly during the winter session.
Jha also claimed that six to seven new leaders will join AAP during Kejriwal’s proposed Shimla visit. However, he did not disclose their names or current political affiliations.
Reiterating the party’s electoral plans, Jha said AAP was preparing to contest in all 68 constituencies and will focus on expanding its organisational presence across Himachal Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
