Shooting’s Neeru Dhanda and athletics’ women’s 4x400m relay strike gold; Gulveer wins bronze, while boxers Parveen and Ankush enter finals; tally reaches 52

India’s medal hunt gathered pace on Tuesday as athletes, shooters and boxers produced a string of podium finishes and final-round berths at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.

Neeru Dhanda, who had earlier clinched gold in the women’s individual trap event with an Asian record of 28 hits, also helped India win silver in the women’s trap team event alongside Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer.

In athletics, the women’s 4×400 m relay team of Kiran Pahal, M.R. Poovamma, Prachi and Vithya Ramraj won gold.

Gulveer Singh clinched bronze in the men’s 5,000 m, completing his third medal of the Games. India also won bronze in the mixed 4×100 m relay, with Gurindervir Singh, Sneha, Animesh Kujur and Harita making up the team.

Pooja won bronze in the women’s high jump, while the Indian men’s 4×400 m relay team clocked a season-best of 3:01.61 and won bronze.

In the men’s pole vault final, Kuldeep Kumar and Dev Meena cleared 5.20 m.

In boxing, Parveen Hooda defeated China’s Li Shu in the women’s 65-kg semifinal to enter the final, assuring herself of at least a silver medal.

Ankush Panghal also advanced to the men’s 80-kg final after defeating Uzbekistan’s Fazliddin Erkinboev.

Narender Berwal won bronze in the men’s +90-kg category.

In tennis, the top-seeded men’s doubles pair of Anirudh Chandrasekar and N Sriram Balaji defeated their Nepalese opponents 6-2, 6-1 to enter the quarterfinals. Yuki Bhambri and Dakshineshwar Suresh also advanced after defeating a Kazakh pair 6-1, 7-5.

In men’s singles, Dakshineshwar Suresh defeated his Indonesian opponent 7-5, 7-6.

India’s official medal tally stood at 52 medals on Day 11.
