Mirabai wins silver, ends India’s 28-year Asian Games jinx

India adds five medals on Day 5; skeet teams, Jay Meena and men’s badminton team among the medallists; medal tally reaches 12

Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal in the women’s 49-kg weight category at the Asian Games in Japan on Wednesday, ending India’s 28-year wait for a medal in Asian Games weightlifting as the country added five medals across weightlifting, shooting, soft tennis and badminton.

India’s tally now stands at 12 medals, including one gold, five silver and six bronze.

Chanu’s silver ended India’s long wait for a medal in weightlifting. India also created history in skeet shooting, with the women’s team winning a medal for the first time in the event at the Asian Games. The men’s team also secured a bronze.

In soft tennis, Jay Meena won a bronze medal in the men’s singles event, giving India its first-ever Asian Games medal in the discipline.

India also secured a bronze medal in the men’s team badminton event. The Indian team lost its semifinal against China but finished with a bronze medal.

The Wednesday’s campaign also saw Indian athletes competing across several other disciplines.

In women’s hockey, India defeated Thailand 20-1 in a Pool B match. In squash, Veer Chotrani defeated Sri Lanka’s Samil Wakeel in the men’s round of 32, while Tanvi Khanna defeated South Korea’s Kim Dami 3-0 in the women’s singles round of 32.

In shooting, Raiza Dhillon finished fourth and Parinaaz Dhaliwal eighth in the women’s skeet final. In kabaddi, India defeated Bangladesh 48-25 in the men’s Group A match.

There were also disappointing results for India. The country finished fourth in the women’s 10m air pistol team event, while Manu Bhaker finished fifth in the individual final.

Indian athletes also progressed towards medal opportunities in disciplines such as wushu and rowing, with athletes qualifying for finals.

India are currently placed 13th in the overall medal standings with 12 medals.
