The Punjab Excise and Taxation Department has detained 152 vehicles carrying goods worth around ₹4.5 crore during a statewide crackdown on suspected GST violations, Finance and Excise and Taxation Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said on Monday.
The latest enforcement drive focused on Mandi Gobindgarh, Khanna and other high-risk commercial corridors, where officials checked vehicles transporting goods, particularly iron scrap and finished steel products. Cheema said officers were examining invoices, e-way bills and other transit documents of the detained vehicles. Taxes and penalties will be recovered wherever violations or discrepancies are established, he said.
The action follows a similar drive last week in which 170 commercial vehicles were detained for alleged GST violations. Of those cases, scrutiny of 91 vehicles has been completed and ₹3.25 crore has been recovered in taxes and penalties, according to Cheema. The remaining cases are under examination.
“The swift recovery of ₹3.25 crore is proof positive that our enforcement teams mean business,” Cheema said.
He said the department would continue monitoring commercial routes across Punjab to prevent revenue leakage and encourage compliance with tax rules.
Cheema said the enforcement campaign was intended not only to recover revenue but also to protect businesses that comply with tax regulations. “Anyone attempting to slip through the cracks will be brought to book and dealt with firmly under the law,” he said.
The department said further action would be taken in the latest cases after verification of the documents and completion of the assessment process.
