A man from Namol village in Sangrur district was referred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala after he allegedly consumed a toxic substance outside the Sangrur Deputy Commissioner’s office, with his wife alleging harassment by members of the village panchayat.

The man, identified as Jagga, was shifted to the Patiala hospital late on Sunday evening and is currently undergoing treatment, according to his wife.

Speaking about his condition, his wife, Manpreet Kaur, said doctors at the hospital were treating him and that he remained under medical care.

She alleged that around 12-13 days ago, members of the village panchayat had entered their house and assaulted her husband. She claimed that she and her mother-in-law were also injured in the incident.

Kaur said the family had repeatedly approached the police seeking action but alleged that no action was taken.

She further said that the village sarpanch threatened the family by invoking the name of an MLA. According to her, the continued harassment and alleged threats left her husband distressed, following which he took the extreme step on Sunday.

“We belong to a poor family, and we are seeking justice,” Kaur said.
