Asian Games: India win two silver medals in shooting

Indian athletes will compete across shooting, swimming, hockey, kabaddi and other sports on September 21

Chandigarh, September 20

India continued its campaign at the 20th edition of the Asian Games in Japan on Day 2, with the Indian contingent competing across 36 sports disciplines. Indian athletes recorded big results in shooting, hockey, cricket, badminton, table tennis, swimming, wushu, teqball and mixed martial arts.

In shooting, Elavenil Valarivan, Sonam Uttam Maskar and Vidarsa K Vinod won the silver medal in the women’s 10m rifle team event with a score of 1898.0. China won gold with 1904.2, which was hailed as a new world record.

In the women’s 10m air rifle individual final, Elavenil Valarivan won silver with 252.4, while Sonam Maskar finished sixth. Japan’s Hinata Taichi won gold with 253.0, described as a new Asian Games record.

India’s women’s hockey team defeated Uzbekistan 19-0 in Pool B, with Deepika Sehrawat scoring eight goals. The result was described as an Asian Games record for the most individual goals by a female player in a single match. India’s men’s hockey team also defeated Indonesia 13-1 in Pool A.

In women’s cricket, India defeated Bangladesh by 114 runs in the semifinal. Shafali Verma scored a hundred, while Bangladesh were restricted to 81. India will face Sri Lanka in the final on September 22.

India also defeated Kazakhstan 3-0 in the first round of the women’s badminton team event. In table tennis, India’s women’s team defeated Indonesia 3-0 and Singapore 3-2, while the men’s team defeated Indonesia 3-0 but lost 3-0 to Iran.

In mixed martial arts, Suchika Tariyal defeated Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa in the women’s traditional 60kg quarterfinal and assured a medal.

In wushu, Aparna lost to Sogand Sinkaeichetan of Iran in the women’s 52kg Sanda Round of 16. Vikrant Baliyan also lost to Soheil Mousavi of Iran in the men’s 75kg Sanda Round of 16.

In teqball, Quimcy Dsouza lost to Japan’s Yuina Sakamoto 12-11, 12-11 in the women’s singles bronze medal match. Quimcy Dsouza and Mohamed Anas Beg lost 9-12, 6-12 to Vietnam’s Hoang Minh Tan Nguyen and Gia Ngih Trinh in the mixed doubles bronze medal match. Quimcy also suffered a back injury. Teqball is a maiden event at the Asian Games 2026.

In swimming, Rishabh Das finished fifth in the men’s 100m backstroke heats and qualified for the final, while Utkarsh Patil finished 12th. In the men’s 100m backstroke final, Rishabh Das finished fifth.

Wushu men’s Changquan saw Mayanglambam Suraj Singh finish 11th in the final. In teqball, the Indian mixed doubles pair also competed in the bronze medal match.
