Rafting and paragliding resume after 2-month suspension; tourism operators eye festive-season revival
Manali, September 20
For two months, the Beas ran without the splash of rafts and the skies over Kullu-Manali were quieter than usual. Now, the valley is alive again with the return of adventure tourism.
River rafting and paragliding resumed on September 16 after the annual monsoon suspension, reopening two of the region’s most popular adventure activities ahead of the festive season.
The district administration suspends adventure activities from July 15 to September 15 every year, citing safety concerns during the monsoon. With the restriction lifted, rafting has resumed on the Beas and paragliding at designated sites across the valley.
The reopening has brought fresh optimism among tourism operators and hoteliers. Manali Hoteliers’ Association president Roshan Thakur and tourism stakeholder Praveen Sood said advance hotel bookings had begun and expected tourist activity to pick up in the coming weeks.
River rafting operator Kishan Thakur said rafting operations resumed on September 16 and tourists had already started arriving. He expected business to gather pace with the approaching festive season.
District Tourism Development Officer Rohit Sharma confirmed that adventure activities had resumed across Kullu district from September 16. He said the annual suspension from July 15 to September 15 was imposed during the monsoon to ensure tourist safety.
For Kullu-Manali, the return of rafting and paragliding marks the beginning of another season when visitors come not just to see the mountains, but to experience them.
