Mini auction set to return after three overseas editions; venue and date yet to be announced

Chandigarh, September 16

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 player auction is set to return to India after three consecutive editions were held overseas, according to reports following the IPL Governing Council meeting on Tuesday.

According to reports, the mini auction is expected to be held in India, but the venue and exact date have not been officially announced. The auction is likely to be held in December.

The previous three auctions were held in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi, with the 2026 player auction held at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on December 16, 2025.

The return to India will follow the IPL’s 2025-27 player auction cycle, approved by the BCCI at its 93rd Annual General Meeting in September 2024.

Under the player regulations for the cycle, franchises can retain a total of six players through a combination of direct retention and the Right to Match option, with a maximum of five capped players and two uncapped players. The total salary cap has been fixed at Rs 157 crore for the 2027 season.

The IPL last conducted a mega-auction in Jeddah for the 2025 season, with 1,574 players registering, including 1,165 Indians and 409 overseas players.

The IPL and BCCI are yet to officially announce the venue and date for the 2027 auction.
