IPL 2027 auction set to return to India after three overseas editions

Mini-auction expected in December; venue and exact date yet to be announced

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 player auction is set to return to India after three consecutive overseas editions, according to a Cricbuzz report following the IPL Governing Council meeting on September 15.

Cricbuzz reported that the auction will be a mini-auction expected in December, with the venue and exact date yet to be finalised.

The previous three auctions were held in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi. The 2026 auction took place in Abu Dhabi on December 16, 2025, according to the official IPL website.

The return to India will follow the IPL’s 2025-27 player auction cycle, approved by the BCCI at its 93rd Annual General Meeting in September 2024.

Under the player regulations, franchises can retain a total of six players through direct retention and the Right to Match option, with a maximum of five capped players and two uncapped players. The salary cap for the 2027 season is Rs 157 crore.

The IPL’s last mega-auction, held in Jeddah for the 2025 season, saw 1,574 players register, including 1,165 Indians and 409 overseas players.

The IPL and BCCI are yet to officially announce the venue and date for the 2027 auction.
