BJP MLA says people expect important portfolio for region; party discusses poll preparations, booth-level strengthening

Kangra MLA Pawan Kajal has said the constituency will seek a bigger role in the Himachal Pradesh Government after the 2027 Assembly elections, asserting that people expected more than merely electing an MLA and wanted an important portfolio for the area.

Kajal was addressing a BJP mandal meeting in Kangra on Sunday, where party leaders discussed preparations for the 2027 elections and strengthening the organisation at the booth level.

“Kangra has remained backward for a long time. The people have elected me three consecutive times on different election symbols, and now they want development and an appropriate share in the government,” Kajal said.

He said people in Kangra were already prepared for the 2027 elections and claimed that the constituency would get a major portfolio in the next government.

Kajal also targeted the Congress government over its election guarantees, alleging that promises, including Rs 1,500 per month for women, five lakh jobs in five years, cow dung procurement and startup support had not been fulfilled.

He said the BJP would organise an ‘Ashirwad Ka Diya’ programme across all 101 booths of the Kangra Assembly constituency on September 17 to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. Around 100 lamps would be lit at each booth, taking the total to nearly 10,100 diyas.

BJP district in-charge Vikram Singh Thakur said the party would launch a month-long programme from September 17, with a focus on strengthening its booth-level organisation. He said the BJP would also highlight development projects implemented with the Central Government support.

Thakur said lamps would be lit at households and near major projects and bridges as part of the initiative.

Targeting the state government, Thakur alleged that schemes introduced by the previous BJP government had either been discontinued or were not functioning effectively. He cited the Himcare and Sahara schemes and accused the government of failing to fulfil its promise of providing Rs 1,500 to women.

He said the BJP would continue to raise issues concerning healthcare, roads, unemployment, women and farmers in the Assembly and before the public.

On increased electricity bills and higher fees imposed by the Pollution Control Board, the MLA said the party would take up the concerns with the state government. He said complaints from the hotel and industrial sectors regarding increased charges and electricity bills would be brought before Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
