Chandigarh, September 7
Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Monday urged young people to take up sports, saying greater participation could help restore the state’s sporting legacy while promoting physical and mental well-being and keeping youth away from drugs.

Speaking about the state government’s ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan’ initiative, Sandhwan said the programme was aimed at encouraging wider participation in sports and identifying talent at the grassroots level. He said the sporting event would provide young athletes from villages, towns and cities an opportunity to develop their abilities and compete at national and international levels.

“Sports not only foster physical and mental growth but also contribute significantly to a longer, healthier life. It is imperative that we integrate sports into our daily routines,” Sandhwan said.

He said sports also teach discipline, resilience and perseverance, helping young people deal with challenges in life.

According to Sandhwan, success in sport comes through sustained hard work and determination, qualities that can help athletes compete on international platforms and win medals for India.

The Speaker said the Punjab government was working to strengthen sports infrastructure and improve the welfare of players. He said the efforts had contributed to renewed interest in sports among young people in the state.

“If we want to transform our state into a vibrant, colourful ‘Rangla Punjab’, our youth must embrace sports, compete internationally and bring laurels for the nation,” he said.

Sandhwan also described sports as an important tool in preventing drug abuse and other social problems. He urged young people to adopt an active lifestyle and stay away from substance abuse.
