Online electricity bill payments rise in Dharamshala

Digital payments account for 80–90% of electricity bill collections in Dharamshala, reducing counter footfall to just 10% of consumers.

The increasing use of digital payment facilities has led to a decline in the number of electricity consumers visiting billing counters in Dharamshala, with nearly 80 to 90 percent of bills now being paid online.

Dharamshala Electricity Division XEN Vikas Thakur said around Rs 6 crore worth of electricity bills are paid online every month, while only about 10 percent of consumers continue to visit counters for payments.

The division records an average monthly bill collection of Rs 6 crore to Rs 7 crore, of which nearly Rs 6 crore is received through various online payment methods.

Consumers can pay their electricity bills through multiple platforms, including Google Pay, RTGS, online bank transfers and Lok Mitra Kendras. These options have reduced the need for consumers to visit electricity offices.

Thakur said the response to online bill payments in the Dharamshala Electricity Division has been encouraging, with a large majority of consumers opting for digital payment methods.

He also said electricity bills include the milk cess and environment cess imposed by the government. The milk cess is applicable to domestic consumers, while the environment cess is levied on commercial consumers. Both cesses are reflected in the electricity bills, allowing consumers to check the applicable charges.
