Congress demands withdrawal of FIR against Rahul, accuses BJP of ‘dictatorship’

CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu accuses BJP of misusing law and agencies to suppress political opponents and says Congress will defend democratic values and constitutional rights.

The Himachal Pradesh Congress on Monday staged a protest in Shimla against an FIR registered by the Uttarakhand Police against Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, calling the action an attack on democratic rights.

Congress workers gathered near the Deputy Commissioner’s office and raised slogans against the BJP while demanding the immediate withdrawal of the FIR.

Addressing the protesters, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said alleged disrespectful behavior was shown towards the Congress national president in Uttarakhand. Instead of taking action against those responsible, he said, an FIR was registered against Rahul Gandhi for objecting to the incident.

Sukhu condemned the action and alleged that the BJP had started a “new trend of dictatorship”. He said the Congress represents all sections of society and claimed that the BJP was worried over Rahul Gandhi’s growing popularity.

The Chief Minister said political parties and elected representatives have the democratic right to question the functioning of governments and administrations and express their views.

He further alleged that BJP governments were misusing laws and investigative agencies to suppress political opponents. Sukhu said the Congress remained committed to protecting the Constitution, democratic values and the fundamental rights of citizens.
