Punjab releases Rs 181 crore for 2.45 lakh orphaned, destitute children: Dr. Baljit Kaur

The Punjab government has allocated ₹432.38 crore for financial assistance to orphaned and destitute children during the 2026-27 financial year, Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur said on Saturday.

Of the total allocation, ₹181.23 crore has already been released to ensure uninterrupted assistance under the scheme, she said.
According to the minister, around 2.45 lakh orphaned and destitute children across Punjab are receiving regular financial support, helping them continue their education and meet essential needs.

The scheme covers children below the age of 21 whose parents have both died, are both missing from home, or are physically or mentally unable to care for the family.

Dr. Kaur said the government wanted to ensure that vulnerable children did not have to compromise on their education, aspirations or opportunities because of poverty, neglect or the absence of parental support.

“Orphaned and destitute children are not merely figures in government records, but a shared responsibility of society,” she said.
She said the government was working towards building an inclusive welfare system aimed at providing vulnerable children with support and opportunities to realise their potential.

The minister said the initiative went beyond financial assistance and reflected the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe childhood, dignified life and equal opportunities for children across Punjab.
