The Punjab Police have arrested six people in two separate operations in Amritsar, recovering 2.9kg of heroin, eight high-end pistols and six live cartridges, officials said on Friday.
The operations were carried out by the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) Amritsar and Counter Intelligence (CI) Amritsar as part of a wider crackdown on weapons and narcotics smuggling.
The arrested people have been identified as Inderpal Singh and Sikandarjit Singh of Bhindi Aulakh village in Amritsar; Happy Singh alias Veerpal Singh of Kakkar in Amritsar; Sunil Masih and Rajan Masih of Mahal in Gurdaspur; and Pardeep Singh of Noorpur in Amritsar.
Police also seized a Hyundai Venue car and a Splendor motorcycle allegedly used in the smuggling operations. Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects were involved in cross-border smuggling and received consignments of weapons and narcotics through drones.
The consignments were allegedly intended for further distribution among criminal elements in Punjab, he said. In the first operation, CI Amritsar teams acted on information that Sunil and Rajan had received a large consignment of illegal pistols and were expected to deliver them to Pardeep Singh near Noorpur.Police intercepted the three suspects and recovered seven pistols, AIG Sukhminder Singh Mann said.
In the second operation, SSOC Amritsar teams arrested Inderpal, Sikanderjit and Happy Singh and recovered 2.9kg of heroin and a pistol from them.
Police said investigations were continuing to establish the wider network and identify other people linked to the alleged cross-border operation. More arrests and recoveries are expected.
Two separate FIRs were registered on 27 August at SSOC Amritsar under provisions of the Arms Act, NDPS Act, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam.
