65 kg of coloured chamcham seized on suspicion of unauthorised food colouring

Food safety officials seize suspected coloured chamcham stock in Rajpura; laboratory testing to determine further action.

Patiala, August 26

Under the supervision of District Health Officer Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, the Food Safety Team, comprising Food Safety Officers (FSOs) Gaurav Kumar and Tarun Bansal, conducted an inspection at Lakri Mandi in Rajpura on August 25, 2026.

During the inspection, three food samples—including khoya barfi, chamcham and rasgullas were collected for laboratory analysis. The chamcham was found to be coloured, raising suspicion of the use of an unauthorised or unpermitted colouring substance. Dr. Gurpreet Kaur said that, in view of the suspicion, the available stock of 65 kg of chamcham was seized and placed in the safe custody of the Food Safety Officer as per procedure, pending laboratory analysis.

The District Health Officer said that further action would be taken strictly in accordance with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act and its rules and regulations, based on the laboratory analysis report. The Food Safety Department reiterated that strict action will be taken against any food business operator found violating food safety standards, particularly in cases involving adulteration or unauthorised use of colours in food products.

Dr. Gurpreet Kaur also urged food business operators to comply with all applicable food safety requirements and ensure consumers receive safe and nutritious food.
