Campaigning intensively for the second phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserted on Saturday that the ongoing polls will bring an end to the dominance of three influential families include the Abdullahs, the Muftis, and the Nehru-Gandhis. “These families have stifled democracy in the region,” he said, emphasizing that without the Modi government’s arrival in 2014, grassroots elections at the panchayat, block, and district levels would not have occurred.

Criticizing opposition parties, Shah said that Jammu and Kashmir’s democracy had been held hostage by these families. He highlighted that the Modi government has fostered grassroots democracy, including reservation policies for OBCs, backward classes, Gujjar Bakarwals, and hill communities. “When I introduced the reservation bill, Farooq Abdullah’s party protested, but we remain committed to our promises,” he added.

Shah also emphasized that the BJP would extend reservations to Gujjars, Bakarwals, and Paharis in promotions, countering claims from Congress and the National Conference. He cited significant development under PM Modi’s leadership, stating that Jammu and Kashmir has transitioned from terrorism to peace, with youth now engaged in technology rather than violence.
