The Golden Hour of the Hills

Shimla Sunset

Shimla, August 16

There is something magical about watching the sunset in the mountains. The sunset view represents its own quiet story; the profound silence and the immense peace surrounding the sunset are the icing on the cake. This is the moment that makes everyone stop in their tracks and soak in the raw beauty of the sunset as the day bids us goodbye.

In the busy rhythm of everyday life, people often forget to pause. But in the hills, watching the sunset is a different feeling altogether. The weary travelers stop to rest; couples sit together and enjoy each other’s company; families gather to take photographs; and everyone just waits, trying to capture the perfect shot of the sunset. That is why it is called the golden hours of the hills.

The golden hour is not just about clicking beautiful photographs for keepsakes; it is more about the emotions attached to it. When I am watching the sunset and looking at the sky, I just feel like I am out of this world and fall short of words to describe my emotions at that moment. It is in these moments that I feel like having a soulmate to share my feelings and emotions with.

A Sunset can be a profound spiritual experience and a refreshing break from the mundane life, with its ups and downs and the stress that brings one’s mood down, especially when living away from home for work or studies. In these situations, watching a sunset and being in nature are often the only things that can truly lift one’s spirits. Encapsulating my feelings in this moment is the dialogue from the film Ye Jawani Hai Deewani, where Deepika says, “Agar Hum chale gaye to ye solid sunset Miss Hojayega Jitna bhi Try karo life mein kuch na kuch to chutega hi To Jahan hai wahin ka Maza lete hai “
Sometimes it’s best to live in that very moment in time because those precious moments and that day will never come back, and then one regrets not enjoying what one could have in that beautiful moment, which is lost and gone forever.

According to Ashish Kumar, a media person from Chandigarh, “When you get too caught up in trying to capture something, the memory itself loses its true value. You fail to imprint the moment in your mind through your own eyes. The best moments are those you hold within yourself, moments that no one else can take away, see, or fully understand through your description. For instance, when a couple sits together on a hillside, the real magic lies in capturing the experience not as a photograph but as a memory, a blend of pure emotion. Lastly, such moments are truly magical. Sunaina, an advertising professional from Panchkula, said, “Every sunset reminds us that endings can be beautiful too.”
