Patiala, July 28

A woman undergoing treatment for a throat tumour died at a private hospital in Patiala, triggering protests by her family, who alleged that medical negligence during surgery led to her death.

According to the deceased’s relatives, Harpreet Kaur had been admitted to the private hospital for treatment of a tumour in her throat. They alleged that she was scheduled to undergo surgery, during which doctors were negligent, resulting in her death.

The family further claimed that, in an attempt to conceal the alleged negligence, the hospital shifted Harpreet Kaur to another medical facility, where her death was confirmed.

The deceased’s body has been kept in the mortuary at Rajindra Hospital, Patiala. Family members have refused to allow the post-mortem examination to proceed, stating that it will only be conducted after a case is registered against the doctor concerned.

Harpreet Kaur’s husband, Malkit Singh, said the couple had three daughters and that the family had been devastated by her death.

“We have three daughters. After my wife’s death, our entire family has been shattered,” Malkit Singh said.

Meanwhile, Gurmeet Singh, In-charge of the Model Town Police Post in Patiala, said police have registered a case based on the statements of the family members and initiated further legal proceedings.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death is underway.
