Patiala, July 18
An employee of the Patiala Municipal Corporation has been arrested after alleged financial irregularities surfaced in the distribution of assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) (PMAY-U), prompting a wider police investigation into the matter.
The accused, identified as Amandeep Singh, was working as a skilled worker with the Municipal Corporation. Police arrested him after a complaint alleged that funds meant for a scheme beneficiary had been diverted.
DSP City-I Sanjeev Singla said that the preliminary investigation revealed the accused had allegedly transferred approximately Rs 1.5 lakh from a beneficiary’s bank account to his personal bank account.
“Following the complaint, an investigation was initiated, based on which the accused was arrested,” Singla said.
The DSP said the accused is currently being questioned in detail and that investigators are examining every aspect of the case to determine whether any other individuals were involved in the alleged irregularities.
He added that the investigation is still underway and that, based on the facts gathered so far, the possibility of more people being implicated cannot be ruled out. If the role of any additional individuals is established during the investigation, strict legal action will be taken against them in accordance with the law.
Police said that once the investigation is completed, a detailed account of the financial transactions and any other alleged irregularities uncovered during the probe will be made public.
