Anganwadi workers use Maha Nati to spread message against drug abuse and violence at Shimla Summer Festival

A vibrant Maha Nati performance by 320 Anganwadi workers emerged as one of the key attractions on the second day of the International Shimla Summer Festival, with participants using the cultural platform to promote women’s empowerment and raise awareness against drug abuse and violence.

Organized by the Women and Child Development Department on Mall Road, the event was themed “MAA” — Mothers Against Abuse and Mothers Against Addiction. Dressed in colorful traditional Himachali attire, including Reshta and Dhatu, the participants combined cultural celebration with a strong social message.

The Deputy Commissioner administered a pledge to the women, who vowed to work towards creating a drug-free society and to stand against violence, discrimination, and injustice faced by women and girls.

District Program Officer Mamta Paul Sharma said the department had linked this year’s Maha Nati with important social issues to encourage greater public awareness and community participation. She said the initiative focused on empowering women to speak out against abuse and to play an active role in addressing the growing challenge of substance abuse among youth.

Sharma said women have a crucial role in bringing about positive social change and expressed confidence that collective efforts by mothers and communities can help curb drug addiction and social evils.

The event showcased Himachal Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage while also delivering a powerful message on social responsibility. Around 320 women participated in the program, demonstrating unity and commitment to building a safer, healthier society.
